A MASTER CLASS: THE OVERVIEW of IMPRO’s APPROACH TO IMPROVISING

PLAYS with the CAST         $80      (limit - 20)

With Dan O’Connor, Jo McGinley, Kari Coleman, Steve Kearin

Impro Theatre creates full-length unscripted plays with sets and costumes in the style of some of the world’s best authors at some of LA’s best theaters. This workshop will give participants a clear picture and practical stage experience of Impro’s overall process and approach to long form narrative.  Last year they performed at Garry Marshall’s Falcon Theatre, The John Anson Ford Amphitheater and the Wallis Annenberg Performing Arts Center. Impro did a ten month residency at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica performing 10 different unscripted productions. They have a school and busy performing space in Los Angeles with classes, workshops and shows year round. www.improtheatre.com

Master Class - Diving Deeper — Getting Unstuck and Uncovering the Story

$60

(limit - 20 per workshop) with Jo McGinley & Stephen Kearin — Twilight Zone

Jo and Stephen will share the Twilight Zone Genre — approach, blocking and directing — within the context of this workshop to demonstrate IMPRO’s approach to long form narrative.  A compelling presence on stage can create a compelling story. This workshop introduces the concepts of Patsy Rodenburg’s The Second Circle, knits it into the world of narrative improvisation, and creates dynamic scene work and stagecraft that ultimately forms a foundation for spontaneous theatre. This workshop is very physical — so come prepared to move. In this workshop we will work on:

How to identify patterns that are in your way, and will learn the skills to adjust your body, breath, and voice so you can be present under pressure.

How to create a character’s POV in the moment, and physicalize it in a way that creates a dynamic scene instantly.

How to create narrative by going deeper into the current moment.

How to take the work seriously, but not take yourself too seriously.

Master Class - Diving Deeper — Being Dynamic / Discovery before Invention $60

(limit - 20 per workshop) with Dan O’Connor & Kari Coleman — Tennessee Williams

Dan and Kari will use the Tennessee Williams genre— approach, blocking and directing — in the context of this workshop to demonstrate IMPRO’s approach to long form narrative.  Improvisers get in their own way by thinking and planning what is to come rather than using the inventory of the moment. This workshop embraces the notion that dynamic improvisation is mindfulness, that how we let go and get out of the way can lead to our best work. The audience’s measure of attention is directly related to your commitment.  We will work on how to dig deeper in the moment and create more defined characters which in turn creates better relationships which evolve into better scenes and better stories.  This workshop is physical.  Wear appropriate clothing that allows you to move.

In this workshop we will work on:

    Emotion before action

The space between dialog ( i.e Acting is not words)

Staying in the moment and discovering what is there without engaging your inner editor.

Taking your time while keeping the scene dynamic.

What is a narrative beat and how to learn to move from one to the next?
